Prevent the transmission of infections by maintaining a clean environment
March 22, 2023

Ensuring a clean environment can be one of the most effective ways to prevent the transmission of infections. In this article, you will learn how to maintain a clean environment in the hospital and home. We will also provide you with general tips to follow in any space.

Clean environment in the home

In the home, proper hand hygiene of all family members, regular cleaning of surfaces, and isolation of sick household members are necessary.

Isolate persons with contagious infections

A patient with a contagious infection should be placed in a separate room, ideally with its own bathroom. The door should always be closed and the room well ventilated.

Wear protective equipment

Other household members should use protective equipment when caring for the patient. The use of drapes is absolutely essential. Most infections are spread mainly through the respiratory tract when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Prolen® Medical's textile face drapes made from 100% polypropylene certified Prolen® Siltex and Prolen® Bodyfresh fibres effectively reduce the risk of contamination.

You can also get the virus from contaminated surfaces. Wear Prolen® Medical gloves to provide antiviral and antimicrobial protection when caring for an infected person.

Clean surfaces regularly

Regularly disinfect and clean surfaces that you touch frequently. For example, doorknobs, the dining table or items in the bathroom. Use products containing chlorine or alcohol. If family members are sick, clean surfaces more often.

Clean environment in the hospital

Employees in healthcare facilities play an important role in keeping the hospital premises clean. However, patients should also help to maintain a clean environment and hygiene.

Check your room

Does your hospital room look clean? If something is not right, inform the staff so they can deal with your request immediately.

Wear protective equipment

Just as in the home, protective equipment helps reduce the risk of infection in the hospital. Prolen® Medical protective drapes, gloves and gowns are made from polypropylene fibre, which has antimicrobial and antiviral properties.

Keep order

Bring only the items you need with you to the hospital. Keep them off the floor. You should keep a waste bin near your bed and use it to throw away rubbish. Take off your slippers and booties before you put your feet on the bed.

Other tips to follow in any space

Follow the tips below in any situation. It doesn't matter if you are at work, in hospital, at home or on the bus.

Maintain good hand hygiene

Did you know that up 80% of infections are spread by dirty hands? Regular hand washing with soap and water is therefore key to preventing illness. Wash your hands after using the toilet, before eating food, and for at least 40-60 seconds each time you return home.

Do not share personal items

Do not share brushes, towels, razors or other personal items with other people or family members.

Use a handkerchief

When sneezing and coughing , cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief. Try to carry tissues with you at all times. If you don't have them at the moment, sneeze into your hand.
