Are respirators really enough?
8 November, 2021

Pandemic measures are becoming increasingly stringent and over the past year, veils have become an essential part of our daily lives. However, in the last few days, the face shields have seemingly gone the way of the dodo and have been replaced by mandatory respirators. Even a respirator is not 100% and there are always options to improve facial protection. We hear this and similar information from every side on a daily basis and yet we often cannot tell the difference between the protective equipment on offer. What level of protection do we need? Which respirators will protect us better? The answers to these questions can also be found below.

Don't be fooled by a respirator

According to the results of the Slovak testing of respirators and protective equipment, we can conclude that a large number of respirators sold on the Slovak market do not meet our national and international protection standards for the European market. The degree of protection is either insufficient or the protective equipment is designed to protect against, for example, smoke or fumes and not against the spread of the Covid-19 virus. The differences are often misleading, leading to unnecessary purchases, for example by the most vulnerable group of the population - pensioners. According to recent statements by Slovak experts and public officials, residents should ensure that they have a respirator with FFP2 protection. It is these respirators that are often confused with those marked KN95, which are similarly shaped. KN95 respirators are not designed for the European market; instead, they are manufactured directly for the Asian market.

Perfect protection

The FFP2 respirator provides everyday protection, filtering a minimum of 94% of airborne particles and allowing a maximum penetration of 8% of particles. The effectiveness of these respirators is usually 8 to 10 hours. For added protection and to ensure minimal particle penetration, we recommend reaching for an antiviral drape that can be worn over the respirator. The antiviral effect of the drapes is provided by the silver and zinc that are permanently trapped in the Prolen® polypropylene fiber. This ensures more than 99% virus reduction. In conjunction with the mandatory wearing of respirators, this works as a truly perfect protection.

Prolen® Medical drapes

In addition to the material, our drapes are also advantageous because they do not get wet when breathing, as they have zero moisture absorption. This ensures that the drapes are still breathable and provide filtration. Prolen® Medical drapes can be repeatedly washed and used without mechanical damage. This means that if you are replacing a used respirator with a new one, you just need to wash the drape and you can use it again. Slovakia boasts several manufacturers of facial protective equipment, which allows you to choose a quality drape of Slovak manufacture.
